Padma newsletter: Not-quite February 2010

Greetings all
OK so this is the not-quite-February newsletter. Didn’t quite manage to get it together in time.
Anyway, the album is finished! It is now with the record company and right this moment I am waiting to hear what they think. I’m really pleased with how it’s come out. You can read about my journey as a first-time producer on my site here.
The new working title is ‘Sustain’, which I think is a wee bit more obvious than my last idea (’Extrospective’). Plus I like the way the letters look next to each other :-)
After shipping off the album to Just Music, I’ve been focusing on writing my MA dissertation. I’ve got to get it finished by end of May so got loads of work to do between now and then. For those of you who joined the mailing list recently, it’s a Buddhist Studies MA. The dissertation is looking at how Buddhism positions humanity in relationship to nature and what impact this has on a Buddhist response to climate change. I’ve got loads of wicked books and articles that I’m working my way through at the moment. Learning lots.
And the Olympics has finished! It has been a fairly full-on patriot fest in the streets of Vancouver. Everyone wearing red and white, mostly drunk and high-fiving passers by while reciting the sacred mantra ‘Go Canada!’. Vancouver spent $7 billion on the games. Two weeks of sport. Meanwhile the downtown eastside is the poorest neighbourhood in Canada and many vulnerable people across the city have nowhere to live. And BC has cut their arts budget by 98%. Apparently the sport was enjoyable to watch though. And I did get to see Damian Marley for free.
No gigs booked as yet, though I will quite possibly be back at the Railway club at the end of March. I love that venue and it seems to be becoming my downtown second home. I have another couple of ideas up my sleeve for the coming months too. But I shall share them if and when they come to anything.
One thing I can share is that I’m planning on a Western Canada tour in the summer and a UK tour in the autumn/fall. So that’s exciting innit.
And finally, if you haven’t already done so, PLEASE become a fan on Facebook.
Thanks guys!
Until next month…
Padma
